Organizing for social business: The issues
Blog PostHow best can employees and managers adapt to today's changing and increasingly social workplace? This has become one of the central questions as organizations look at social computing as a new primary channel in their organization, both amongst their workers as well as for their customers and business partners.
The Biggest From > To in a Generation
Blog PostYesterday wrapped up Austin City Limits, an incredible 3-day multi-stage music festival in Austin, Texas. The event seems to be marked by the weather each year. There was the dust bowl year of 2005, and of course last year was the Dillo Dirt (and rain) year. This year will go down as the perfect weather year, I think. One great thing about all outdoor music festivals in general, is that they are great equalizers. In my case, I find myself sitting next to high school kids who have never known a day without internet access. The reality is that modern organizations are no longer in total control with customers posting public complaints on Twitter and employees leaking information on Facebook. The sooner leaders accept this reality, the better. However, Charlene recognized that there are limits to how much control a business will give up.

Blog PostLast week, I gave a talk in Frankfurt at the impressive E20 Summit about leadership in devolved organisations. My starting point was the myth that leadership is somehow less important in new, networked organisations. Not so. If anything, it is more important than ever, but the focus and practice of leadership is changing; and if we are to engage leaders and involve them in the development of social business structures, then we need to be able to understand and address their challenges and issues using language that resonates with them.
